We've Arrived!!!

I decided to set up a blog so that I could let everyone know what's goin' on up here...

So we arrived up here on Monday just after 1pm. The flight up here was amazing! After getting on the smallest plane I have ever seen (it only had one propellor at the front!), we flew out of Cairns and headed out to sea. We reached the Great Barrier Reef and followed it all of the way up the coastline. The whole way up we had the reef out the right side windows and the coastline out to the left, so that was cool as.

Just out of Lockhart we could see the town, it's this tiny little place in the middle of rainforest and right next to the coast.

As soon as we got off the plane the heat hit us. It is unbelievable how hot and humid it is up here! After getting off the plane we unloaded the bags into the school troopies and drove into town. The town itself is bigger than I expected, but is still tiny. We dropped off our groceries and fired up the fridge and freezer. Our place is cool, much better than we had imagined. I'll post some pictures of it when I take some so you can get an idea of the place. We then headed on a guided tour of Lockhart, heading out to the beach/boat ramp first. As we got out there, signs were up warning of crocs in the area, as there had been sightings and croc slides on the beach. We then headed back into town and collected our posted items and go to the local store. We only had to buy an electricity card as we bought most of the things we needed to get by in Cairns the day before. The post office was the first time that we had contact with the local people. Three kids around 5 or 6 were hanging around outside the post office. We introduced ourselves and they told us their names. The first thing one of the little boys said to Amanda was 'You have boyfriend?' Amanda nodded and said yes and the kid started to look around. I had just walked back out of the post office and the little boy points at me and goes 'White fella?' We just laughed and he was laughing too, it was classic! After this we went home and started to get set up. Not long afterwards kids starting hanging around out the front all intrigued about the new teachers. We went out and introduced ourselves and they were so friendly. They all wanted to know about us and what we would be teaching. Kids were hanging off Amanda looking at her jewellery and touching her hair. All of the locals that drove or walked past said hi and waved, so that was cool. Then it started pouring rain! Lockhart wet season in action.

Since then we've just been setting up the place. It's not there yet but we're getting there. Tomorrow we start at school, the kids don't start 'til Tuesday so it will be meetings and getting things organised for next week I'm guessing. I'll keep you posted...
